Exotics
Exotics
Here at Kelly Veterinary Hospital we treat a wide range of patients including all small furries from rabbits and hamsters to skunks and hedgehogs. We treat pets with wings from birds of prey to small parrots and scaled pets from snakes to lizards and even the odd alligator!
We are home to very experienced vets and nurses so you know your exotic pets in the right hands. We are proud to be the vet for the Irish National Reptile Zoo.
We have treated hundreds of exoctics here at kelly Veterinary Hospitals, check out some of our case studies below
Luna the guinea pig with the broken leg
Luna and over 200 more guinea pigs were rescued by The Critter Farm in 2019, these poor animals were found in horrible condition in severe pain, discomfort and all malnourished. Little Luna was found with a damaged back leg and rushed to Kelly Veterinary Hospital. We immediately took her in for X-Rays which showed that Luna had a fractured femur. Luna needed lifesaving surgery to repair her leg, it was a risk given Luna’s condition. Dr Paul Kelly along with nurse Hannah N took the risk and successfully placed a pin in her femur repairing her leg. Since surgery Luna has made a wonderful recovery with special thanks to her carers in the Critter Farm.
Bambam the Asian Water Monitor Lizard with the sore toe
Bambam has been one of our bigger patients to treat, he is an Asian water monitor lizard. These lizards are native to South and Southeast Asia and can grow up to 2meters in length. Bambam arrived to the hospital with a damaged toe. We preformed x-rays which showed us a fracture, our only option was to perform surgery to remove the damaged toe. Bambam was so long he almost did not fit our operating table. Fortunately his surgery was a success and Bambam is back to his home at the national reptile zoo.
Guiness the Skunk
Here in Kelly Veterinary Hospital we also perform routine surgeries on exotics, Guiness the skunk was brought in to be castrated (male nuetereing). Castrations are a very common surgery performed in veterinary practices, it involves the removal of the testicles. The procedure performed on Guiness was similar to the surgical technique used to castrate cats, it is a day procedure with Guiness being dropped in to our hospital in the morning and going home with same afternoon. Guiness’ surgery was a success and he even posed for some photos with our nurses.
